Description

Join us for a panel featuring Twin Cities puppeteers Oanh Vu, Yani Foreman, and Ty Chapman!

Oanh: Oanh Vu is a puppeteer, filmmaker, educator, and community organizer. She is a 2nd generation Vietnamese American who grew up in rural Minnesota. She uses humor and the playfulness of puppetry to tell stories of healing for herself and her Southeast Asian community. Her stories feature characters grappling with the past and their pain. Ultimately, they are transformed by the struggle, and able to walk through the world from a place of hope and power.

Ty: Ty Chapman is a Twin Cities–based author, poet, puppeteer, and playwright of Nigerian and European descent. He has been creating art with social justice themes for many years and is passionate about speaking to the Black experience in America. His recent accomplishments include being named a Loft Literary Center Mirrors and Windows fellow, creating a one-man shadow puppet and marionette show for Puppet Lab, and publishing a collection of poems through SOFTBLOW.

Yani: Yani is a Filmmaker, Puppeteer & Educator based out of Minneapolis, MN.  Her work explores healing, trauma, and identity through the Black/Queer/Female gaze, that’s grounded in spirituality. Her purpose as a creator is to tell the stories and document the Black experience as authentically and respectfully as possible to pass on to the next generation. To be a Griot. In African traditions, they're likened to historians and the librarians of the culture. The Story holders who carry on the identity and culture of the village. With influences as diverse as Terence Nance, Khalik Allah, and John Singleton, Yani offers a refreshing and unique take on storytelling blending styles, techniques, and genres to tell stories.
